Fall In Love With Learning

Growing up, I have been a huge advocate for education. We all have spent the majority of our first 18 years of life in school, yet so many students fall out of learning right after high school. Even students who do go to college end up dropping out. I've always asked myself, why do these students fall out of love with learning? I have fallen so hard in love with learning, that I just did not understand why these other students disliked learning so much.

That was until high school when I started being a tutor for students in subject areas of math and science. Being new to tutoring at the time, I did not know what to expect nor how to effectively teach the students. All I knew was that I wanted to focus on making sure the student understood the content and saw how awesome it was to learn it.

One day after tutoring a freshman for two hours, he thanked me and told me something that shaped how I view learning: "I never understood why we need to know this stuff or how it's applied in the real world. You make learning a lot funner than my teachers."

I didn't incorporate any sort of games into the lecture or did anything to make the experience more enjoyable. All I did was explain the content so that the students understood the implications of the content in the real world. Too many times, schools focus only on feeding students information that they need to regurgitate. In doing so, schools suck out the fun out of learning and that's why many students don't want to stay in education for long. The easiest way to help students fall in love with learning is through personalized learning. The most common form of personalized learning so far is tutoring.

For these reasons, I agreed to become the co-founder of Fall In Love (FIL) Learning; a tutoring business dedicated to helping students fall in love with learning again, all while providing free and accessible tutoring resources to students from underprivileged family backgrounds.

Throughout this past weekend, the founder of FIL Learning, Kimberly Guevera, tasked me with creating the website for our tutoring business. I am proud to say that throughout the weekend, I was able to create a static website with basic information about how to contact us. Check it out at fillearning.fun.
